WQU’s Advisory Board meets on a regular basis. Active members provide support regarding educational requirements, professional preparation, and overall workplace development to WQU leadership. WorldQuant University’s Advisory Board is a group of prominent leaders in the finance, business, and education sectors who function as advocates and advisors. Igor Tulchinsky, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of WorldQuant, LLC, established the WorldQuant Foundation, which sponsors WorldQuant University. Through WorldQuant, it is a Strategic Partner of the Milken Institute and the World Economic Forum (WEF). In 2021, WQU was accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission ( DEAC). By June 2017, it had enrolled 700 students from 40 countries. In late 2016, the university was awarded the 2016 Dive Award: Startup of the Year by the publication Education Dive. As its first president, Sarah McCue, PhD, conceptualized and led the launch of WQU's financial engineering Master's Degree.ĭaphne Kis, who had served on the University's Advisory Board, was brought on as CEO and Board Director in 2017. After being licensed by the Louisiana Board of Regents, the Foundation launched WQU in 2015 enrolling several hundred students in a free, online Master's degree in Quantitative Finance. The University is funded by the WorldQuant Foundation. WorldQuant University was founded by Igor Tulchinsky in 2015 on the premise that talent is equally distributed but opportunity is not. WQU’s Applied Data Science Lab is a credentialed offering where students use data analysis to solve real-world and complex problems. It is licensed by the Board of Regents of the State of Louisiana and accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) for its Master’s Degree in Financial Engineering Program. As of May 2022, between its two programs, WQU has graduated more than 11,000 students from over 100 countries. While this year’s cohort is similar in size to the previous programme, the degree saw applications fall from 448 to 299 – perhaps partly in response to the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus. Other measures included reduced class sizes and enhanced cleaning. For classes that took place on campus, City University established an ‘emergency response unit’ to provide students and teachers with updates and advice on virus-related matters. These trial runs helped administrators identify and correct a number of potential issues, the university says. To help prepare for online assessments – conducted 100% remotely this autumn – the programme carried out a series of virtual practice exams ahead of the formal tests. In line with other universities, City University has adapted to new ways of learning in recent months. As a result, the institution didn’t experience the problems with travel visas that afflicted US and European peers, when the coronavirus pandemic disrupted the plans for many prospective students in the 2020 intake. City University’s programme – led by Tao Li, a professor in the department of economics and finance – has 55 students in its latest cohort, none of whom are international. Quant finance master’s courses at Hong Kong institutions have a low number of foreign students compared with the international average. The module involves topics such as differences between regulatory structures in China and the US, the liberalisation of China’s capital account, and potential currency pegs of the Hong Kong dollar. The university says one of the more popular elements of the programme among the current cohort was an advanced module on international financial management. The programme is completed over two semesters for full-time students, with part-time study also available. This year, the course added a new elective on quantitative asset management and hedge fund strategies. Students also choose two elective modules from a wide-ranging list, including credit risk management and financial econometrics. The City University course requires students to complete eight core modules in topics ranging from corporate finance to options pricing and stochastic calculus. The Master of Science in Financial Engineering at City University of Hong Kong is one of a trio of programmes affiliated to institutions in Hong Kong in ’s Quant Guide for 2021.
